Hope Beyond the Diagnosis: Beckham's Journey
The Inspiration Behind the Blog
If you’re new here, welcome! Whether you’ve just received a prenatal diagnosis, you’re raising a child with spina bifida or another disability, or you’re simply here to learn about Beckham’s story, I’m so glad you’ve found us. I’m Hailey—a wife, a mom to two incredible boys, and a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of caring for some of the smallest and sickest babies in the NICU. I’ve walked alongside families as they received life-changing diagnoses, navigated surgeries and long hospitalizations, celebrated victories both big and small, and prepared to bring their medically complex babies home. Supporting those families has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Because of my work, I have cared for babies born with spina bifida before. I understood what a NICU stay might look like. I knew the surgeries, the medical terminology, and many of the challenges families faced during those first weeks of life. But nothing could have prepared me for the day I found myself on the other side. When our son, Beckham, was unexpectedly diagnosed with spina bifida, I went from being the provider helping families navigate uncertainty to becoming the parent desperately searching for a sliver of hope while feeling like I was drowning in a sea of darkness. The NICU felt familiar. Life after the NICU did not. What I didn’t fully understand until I became Beckham’s mom was everything that comes after discharge—the specialists, therapies, medications, surgeries, testing, adaptive equipment, insurance hurdles, and the countless decisions families continue to face as their children grow. Every appointment has taught me something new, and I know I’ll continue learning right alongside Beckham. Although my career gave me a unique perspective, it could never fully prepare me for the emotional side of this journey. I now know what it’s like to sit on the other side of the conversation, trying to absorb difficult news while wondering what it means for your child’s future. I understand the sleepless nights, the tears after difficult appointments, the anxiety of the unknown, and the fierce, unwavering love that grows for a child who faces challenges most people never see. Some of my greatest lessons haven’t come from textbooks or years in the NICU—they’ve come from being Beckham’s mom. That’s why I created this space. One of my greatest hopes is that by sharing what we’re learning—the victories, the setbacks, the practical information, and the honest emotions—expecting parents and families already walking this road will feel a little more prepared and a little less alone. I’ve learned that hope doesn’t erase the hard things. It simply helps carry us through them. Here, I’ll share Beckham’s milestones, honest reflections from our journey, practical information about spina bifida, insights from both my experience as a neonatal nurse practitioner and as Beckham’s mom, resources for navigating life with medical complexity, and encouragement for parents walking a similar road. As Beckham grows, I’ll continue sharing what we’re learning from his specialists—whether that’s new therapies, medications, surgeries, adaptive equipment, or the many aspects of caring for a child with spina bifida beyond the NICU walls. I’ll also sprinkle in pieces of everyday motherhood, favorite baby products, and the ordinary moments that make this journey so beautiful. Above all, I hope this blog reminds you that a diagnosis is not the end of a beautiful story—it’s simply the beginning of a different one. And I hope you’ll always remember this truth: A diagnosis does not define a child. Every child is worthy of love, celebration, opportunity, and endless hope. Thank you for being here. Whether you’re searching for answers, looking for encouragement, or simply following Beckham’s journey, I hope you’ll stay awhile as we celebrate every milestone, navigate every challenge, and continue finding hope in the unexpected. “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” — Psalm 139:14
